Levels of Phonological Awareness

This week’s assignment focuses specifically on the levels of phonological awareness and the vocabulary terms that are key to understanding and teaching it effectively.

Science of Reading:

Research from multiple years gives us a better understanding of how we read and the process our young minds go through.

Scarborough’s Reading Rope:

Details each specific skill needed for students to read fluently.

Phonics:

Breaking words down into individual letters to identify the sounds of each respective letter.

Phonological Awareness:

Being able to take words and recognize the sounds that are associated with syllables and rhymes embedded in words.

Levels of Phonological Awareness Chart

Students at the grades between kindergarten and 1st Grade will be introduced to each level of phonological awareness as they progress in their recognition of the sounds that each letter makes and the formation of words.
